We went to Cutting Edge Water Jet in South Beloit to get our carbon fiber structural ribs cut out. Cutting Edge’s waterjet process can cut parts of practically any material up to 144″ x 144″ in size, and causes no heat damage or warping. They also have other capabilities such as welding, electropolishing, press brake, shearing, rolling, sanding, and assembly. The company specializes in the aerospace, machining, metal stamping, and signage/architectural industries, but can be flexible–they were certainly willing to work with us.
The ribs turned out very clean and true to our CAD files, which included all the bolt holes and pass-throughs needed for mounting our front and rear suspensions as well as our roll cage. Last year, all the bolt holes were hand drilled with a power drill, so this will be significantly more accurate.
Anyways, we’ll be ready to install the ribs on the car as soon as the redesigned, strengthened mount plates for the suspensions and roll cage are machined and then validated for proper fit.
Check out their press release about us here. Thanks again, Cutting Edge!
